The Sunrise Health system of hospitals—including Sunrise, MountainView and Southern Hills—have earned re-accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers for sustaining superior levels of service for patients experiencing a cardiac episode. Combined, they represent the first networked of accredited chest pain centers in Las Vegas.

“We are honored to have received this kind of recognition for our services related to chest pain and cardiac care,” said Sylvia Young, CEO and President of the Sunrise Health System. “Together, our hospitals service most of the city, meaning that the citizens of Las Vegas are well cared for when it comes to this serious and life-threatening condition.”

Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 dying annually of heart disease. More than five million Americans visit hospitals each year with chest pain. The Society’s accreditation process ensures centers meet or exceed quality-of-care measures in acute cardiac medicine.

The Chest Pain Centers at Sunrise, MountainView and Southern Hills hospitals have demonstrated their expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the Society of Chest Pain Centers. Key areas in which a Chest Pain Center must demonstrate expertise include:

Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system

Assessing, diagnosing and treating patients quickly

Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms

Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures

Ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training

Maintaining organizational structure and commitment

Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care

Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a heart attack

This accreditation is the latest in the system’s new cardiac programs. Earlier this month, Sunrise Hospital recently opened its new Hybrid Operating Room—the first in Nevada. Both Sunrise and MountainView Hospitals also recently began offering Heart Murmur Programs as part of their cardiac services. To learn more about these and other cardiac programs at Sunrise Health, please visit www.sunrisehealthinfo.com.
The hospitals of the Sunrise Health System are proud to announce that they are the first hospital system in Nevada to use a new, secure software solution, AirStrip CARDIOLOGY™, to read electrocardiographs (ECG). The new technology allows clinicians to improve cardiac patients’ care by providing near real-time ECG data to cardiologists quicker, more accurately and that’s more easily shared with consulting colleagues.

The hospitals of Sunrise Health include Sunrise Hospital, MountainView Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital and Sunrise Children’s Hospital—featuring the state’s only pediatric open heart program.

“This technology transforms the way physicians are able to interact with their cardiac patients,” said Sylvia Young, CEO and President of the Sunrise Health System. “Having this ECG data available on a mobile device allows a physician to consult on a case almost instantly and more precisely, leading to faster diagnosis that benefits the patient.”

AirStrip CARDIOLOGY has the capability to zoom in without distorting the image, giving cardiologists the ability to see changes in electrical cardiac activity that’s as small as 0.5 millimeters, which can be hard to read on a faxed ECG or on a PDF image. A change that small may indicate a serious heart problem or an emergency condition.

“Rapid access to information is very important in decision making for cardiologists treating critically ill heart patients,” said Stephen Portz, MD, FACC, Chief of Cardiology at Sunrise Hospital. “The quicker the heart artery can be opened, the better the chance of the patient living and sustaining less heart damage. Getting an ECG sent to me on my Smartphone or touch pad will allow me to make an immediate decision to get everyone in motion to get this patient to the Cath Lab to open the artery and restore blood flow.”

AirStrip CARDIOLOGY is built on the robust and secure mobile application platform AppPoint™, created by AirStrip Technologies, Inc. Last year, the Food and Drug Administration cleared the product, which utilizes highly secure, multi-factor authentication, and is fully HIPAA compliant. AirStrip CARDIOLOGY uses data from the GE Healthcare MUSE® Cardiology Information System, making it available on iPhones® and iPads™.
MountainView Hospital announced today that in addition to its $34 million emergency services expansion, which is currently underway, it will also build a 60,000 square foot patient tower above the new emergency room and intensive care unit. The project in its entirety will exceed $60 million.

“We are very excited about the new patient tower and ER expansion,” said Will Wagnon, CEO of MountainView Hospital. “By expanding our campus and its service offerings, we further our mission of giving the community clinical reasons to choose MountainView for their medical care.”

The second floor of the new patient tower will be used for a 32-bed medical/surgical unit and the third floor will be shelled for future growth. The hospital also plans to renovate its main lobby and café. The tower will be built concurrently with the ER/ICU addition and plans to be complete by the end of the year.

Last summer, MountainView Hospital began construction on its new emergency room and 12-bed intensive care unit. Renovations were also made to the 72-bed medical surgical unit on the fourth floor. The expansion will nearly double the size of the emergency room from 22 to 42 beds, and will offer additional amenities such as:

A dedicated emergency room entrance and a separate ambulance entrance

A “Fast Track” and new Triage area for rapid medical evaluation and initiation of treatment

A helipad conveniently located near the emergency room to help the transport teams get patients into the emergency room quickly

New equipment including a PET-CT, offering advanced metabolic imaging capabilities to help quickly evaluate chest pain patients

In 2011, MountainView Hospital added a number of amenities to its campus, including a Walgreen’s Pharmacy on the first floor of the Medical Office Building (the first of its kind in Nevada), an 18-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit on the sixth floor and a state-of-the-art retail store in the front lobby. Nathan Adelson Hospice will also open on MountainView’s campus later this year. All of these services give the hospital the ability to provide even better care for its patients and the community.

Two of the Sunrise Health Hospital’s Certified Stroke Centers—Sunrise Hospital and MountainView Hospital— have been recognized for high performance by the American Heart and American Stroke Associations.

Sunrise Hospital and the Nevada Neurosciences Institute (NNI) have received the 2011 American Heart/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® (GWTG) Stroke Gold Plus Performance Achievement Award. This is third consecutive year Sunrise and the NNI have been recognized at the gold level.

To receive this award, Sunrise Hospital achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all GWTG-Stroke Performance Achievement indicators for 24 consecutive months and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with seven of 10 GWTG-Stroke Quality Measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care. These measures include aggressive use of medications, such as tPA, antithrombotics, anticoagulation therapy, DVT prophylaxis and cholesterol reducing drugs, all aimed at reducing death and disability and improving the lives of stroke patients.

MountainView Hospital has been recognized with the 2011 American Heart/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines® Stroke Silver Quality Achievement Award. MountainView Hospital achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all GWTG-Stroke Performance Achievement indicators for 12-months.

“Meeting rigorous standards to provide timely, quality care when our patients need it most is a top priority for us. This award, in addition to being certified Primary Stroke Centers, makes both Sunrise and MountainView Hospitals stroke leaders in our community,” said Sylvia Young, President and CEO of Sunrise Health.

Both hospitals have also earned a Target stroke honor roll designation. This recognition is awarded for hospitals meeting a specific GWTG achievement level in addition to achieving IV rt-PA door-to-needle times 60 minutes or less in 50 percent or more of applicable acute ischemic stroke patients (minimum of six) during one calendar quarter. These awards recognize Sunrise and MountainView’s commitment and success in consistently implementing the most up-to-date guidelines and recommendations for stroke patients.

Hospitals recognized in each category achieve at least 85 percent compliance to GWTG measures. Those achieving 85 percent compliance for 24 consecutive months receive the Gold Performance Achievement Award, with the Silver Performance Achievement Award going to those with 85 percent compliance for 12 consecutive months.

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds. Scientific studies reveal that the Get With The Guidelines Program works for improved patient survival.

Las Vegas, NV (Feb. 24, 2011) – Health Services Coalition (HSC) and the Sunrise Health System of hospitals are pleased to announce an agreement has been reached that will allow the 260,000 HSC members to continue to access Sunrise Health hospitals for their healthcare needs. Twenty-two health funds and employers in Southern Nevada are represented by HSC and the Sunrise Health System includes Sunrise Hospital, Sunrise Children’s Hospital, MountainView Hospital and Southern Hills Hospital.

The two-year agreement crosses new territory for both parties with future rate increases linked to the Sunrise Health Hospitals achievement of targeted quality measures, such as those based on publicly reported quality data, hospital readmission rates and others. The status of Sunrise Health’s performance on these quality indicators will be reviewed by the hospital system and HSC on a quarterly basis. Also, Sunrise Health and HSC have agreed to develop a mutually acceptable report card on hospital care that would be available to the public.

“Providing affordable, quality health care to its members’ patients is HSC’s first priority,” said Leslie Johnstone, executive director of HSC. “Through our negotiations with Sunrise Health, we have been able to come to an agreement on a reasonable price for care and implement new quality measures which will improve hospital care and, in turn, reduce hospital costs for our members.”

“The Sunrise Health Hospitals have always made patient safety and quality care top priorities and this new agreement reinforces that commitment for the people of Southern Nevada,” said Sylvia Young, CEO of the Sunrise Health System. “We look forward to continuing to work in collaboration with the Coalition to provide high quality, affordable care to their members.”

HSC members will continue to have access to the four Sunrise Health System hospitals, which feature a higher level of care and nationally recognized programs in emergency medicine, cardiovascular services, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, rehabilitation and pediatrics.
LAS VEGAS –Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and Sunrise Children’s Hospital have been awarded the Consumer Choice Award for the 15th consecutive year. Only 1.3% of hospitals nationwide have received the Consumer Choice Award for 15 straight years.

This award is presented every October by the National Research Corporation (NRC) and is determined by consumers based on the hospital that they believe possesses:

Best Overall Quality
Best Overall Image/Reputation
Best Doctors
Best Nurses

The study is conducted in cities throughout the U.S. and is the nation’s largest and most comprehensive study of its kind. No other survey used to measure hospital preferences contains more responses than the Consumer Choice study.

“We are proud to be recognized by our community as the consumer choice hospital for the 15th consecutive year,” said Sylvia Young, President and CEO for Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center and Sunrise Children’s Hospital. “It is a real honor to be consistently recognized by our community for providing outstanding quality. This award is a true testament to our staff, physicians and volunteers who believe in service excellence and work hard to provide high-quality, compassionate care to our patients.”

Ginny Martin, President of NRC’s Ticker Division, said winners are determined by consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in the company’s Healthcare Market Guide Tickerâ? study. Of the 3,200 hospitals named by consumers in the study, the winning facilities rank highest in their Core Based Statistical Areas (CBSAs), as defined by the US Census Bureau. The Ticker study surveyed over 250,000 households representing over 450,000 consumers in the contiguous 48 states and the District of Columbia.

Las Vegas, NV -- HCA, The parent company of four local hospitals—Sunrise Hospital, MountainView Hospital, Southern Hills Hospital and Sunrise Children’s Hospital—was named today by The Ethisphere Institute as one of the world’s 100 most ethical companies.

HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) joins Adobe, Cisco Systems, Google, Symantec, Granite Construction and Whole Foods in the annual listing recognizing companies that go beyond legal minimums and introduce innovative ideas benefiting the public in sector-leading ways.

Through in-depth research and a multi-step analysis, Ethisphere reviewed nominations from companies in more than 100 countries and 36 industries. The methodology for the World’s Most Ethical Companies includes reviewing codes of ethics, litigation and regulatory infraction histories; evaluating the investment in innovation and sustainable business practices; looking at activities designed to improve corporate citizenship; and studying nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and customers.

“The competition for the World’s Most Ethical Companies was the strongest it has ever been, with a record number of organizations vying for this distinguished honor,” said Alex Brigham, Executive Director of the Ethisphere Institute. “This year’s group recognizes the important role ethics play in brand reputation, which ultimately is the most valuable asset for a corporation. There is a strong correlation between a company’s ethics program and its performance, with ethical companies outperforming the market both in terms of upside performance as well as in avoidance of catastrophic investor loss. This proves that having a commitment to ethics is a competitive advantage and is imperative to business.”

HCA Chairman and CEO Richard Bracken credited the company’s workers, saying “Thousands of HCA employees work every day to help our patients, and they do it with diligence, compassion and integrity.
